10 Holiday Safety Tips

Some great ways to keep your family safe this holiday season!

Holiday Safety Tips

With all of the hustle and bustle this time of year, sometimes we can overlook some very important things that can threaten to really damage our holiday spirit.  Just by taking a few extra precautions this season you can avoid anything (or anyone) putting a damper on your Christmas.

  1. Have your lights on a timer.  Indoor and outdoor lights can be programmed to come on and off so if you are away, even for just one night, it will look like someone is at home.  You can go one step further and pre-program your DVR to record at certain times so that your tv will come on.
  2. If you have a real tree, you have a potential fire hazard.  Be sure to turn your lights off before bed and keep candles and anything flammable far from your tree.  Using LED lights is safest and check for any cord damage before plugging them in.
  3. Be sure your tree is stable and not going to fall over.  You can anchor it to the wall using a tack and some string if you are having a hard time keeping it upright.  Be sure to water it every day which  will also keep your tree from tipping over.
  4. Follow manufacturer  instructions and only use products as they were intended for indoor or outdoor use
  5. Add 15 minutes to your travel time, even just throughout the city.  People are in a hurry and are anxious to get shopping or to a holiday party.  Make sure you are not in a rush so you can take your time on the roads.  Many people are on holidays which means there are more cars on the road, leading to more stressed out drivers.
  6. Be sure all candles are extinguished when you leave a room or go to bed for the night.  To be even safer you can use battery operated candles.
  7. Keep your holiday plants out of reach of children and pets.  Poinsettias, holly and mistletoe are poisonous to your kids/fur kids
  8. Keep an eye on what you are cooking.  Don’t leave your house with the oven or stove on.  Stay in the room while you are cooking
  9. Don’t leave your gifts in your car.  There is a substantial increase in car break-ins during the holidays.  If you are shopping from store to store, keep your shopping bags in the trunk so no one can see them.
  10. And though it’s been said, many times, many ways – DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!!

Have a Safe and Happy Holiday!
